1st Six Weeks

Our focus for the first six weeks of school will be to build upon prior knowledge of literary elements and analysis.  We will polish our abilites so that we are ready to further challenge ourselves.

We will explore our true colors and apply our knowledge while communicating with our peers.  We will read various texts such as
The City of Ember.  Our writing focus will be a combination of poetry and personal narratives.

I hope that you will find this course challenging and rewarding.  The specific lesson plans can be found above.  Major grades are marked in red.  Please remember that we all must learn to be flexible as plans can and usually do change.  Unexpected changes will not be posted online.  Please email if you have questions about assignments or navigating school web.

I look forward to working with you this year!

Independent Reading

I truly love to sit in a quiet room and read my favorite novels for hours.  You may feel the same way, or you may have found that reading is not "your thing."  Either way, silently reading to yourself is one of the quickest ways to become a better reader and increase your knowledge in every area of life.

6th grade LEAP students should be reading a new novel every week.  As a class, we will visit the school library every other week where you can check out up to three novels.  You may also read novels from home.

You are required to bring a novel, from home or school, to class every single day!  On library days, you will be given the rest of the time to read your novel.  You will also have the first ten minutes of every class period to read.

No, you will not have to do any book reports.  However, please be active in the following forums.  You will receive one grade per six weeks based on your participation.  Participation should demonstrate knowledge of your reading and thoughtful responses to your peers.

But really....it's just fun to talk about books!

ALL ABOUT ME

I have lived in four different states, and I love to travel.  I graduated from San Diego State University in 2006.  This is my fifth year to teach and my second year at Killian.  I am married and have one daughter, McKenzie.  She is 18 months old.  I love what I do, and I am looking forward to spending time with you this year!

Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins

Hunger Games is about a young girl, Katniss, who lives in a very different world than what you and I could ever dream of.  Katniss takes the place of her sister in the "Hunger Games" which is a fight to the death.  Winning means killing people she cares about, but it also means her family won't go hungry anymore.  Deciding not to kill means certain death for herself and family.  This novel is full of conflict, and it has something in it for everyone....action for the guys and a love story for the girls. I recommend that your next novel be Hunger Games.
